Dear TSU Members,
Thanks to all who attended the Billy Marchenski/Radix workshop last Saturday. Billy kicked our butts with some intense cardio and martial arts, and we did some spooky experiments with hybrid-animal bodies and other sci-fi stuff. Thanks to everyone who attended; I think it was a great success.
I have great news about the upcoming mentorship program with CORPUS, a physical theatre company from Quebec. The program will be taking place on Saturday, May 26th at the Festival site at Bear Creek Park in Surrey. And Marnie Perrin, the festival artistic director, has hooked us up with a pretty amazing package. If you sign up for this mentorship day on May 26, you get to see two shows by CORPUS, Les Moutons and A Flock of Flyers, as well as participate in a workshop with members of the company centred around their Moutons piece, all completely free of charge.
I have attached the official SFU welcome package, as well as the festival guide. *But please note, the times have changed*. The two shows, Les Moutons and Flock of Flyers, will still begin at 11:00am and 3:30pm respectively, but the SFU Master class has been changed to 12:45 - 2:30pm in the program room. This was a special accommodation by the Festival and CORPUS for those (myself included) involved in Hive: The New Bees. This new schedule means that the whole mentorship package now concludes at 4:15pm, leaving us New Bees with ample time to get back for our call time at Chapel Arts. So, the new schedule is as follows:
11:00 – 11:45 Les Moutons
12:45 – 2:30 SFU Master class
3:30 – 4:15 Flock of Flyers
The shows are both interactive, physical, site-specific, surrealist comedies, and if you browse the website, you can track down some pretty great video footage. I think it's gonna be a nice light, outdoorsy way to re-connect with our fellow theatre students during the summer break, and a great chance to work with some visiting artists from out of province, with a different perspective. You can check out more details of their work, including video footage, right here. It's also a great chance to get involved with the Surrey Children's Festival, somewhere you might consider mounting your own work. Marnie is herself an SFU Theatre grad who graduated at the same time as the guys from Radix Theatre.
This mentorship package is open to all prospective, current, and alumni theatre students, of any year and level of experience, as well as other members of the contemporary arts. If you'd like to register for this opportunity, please e-mail me (Conor) at firstname.lastname@example.org with your Name, Year and Area of Study, e-mail address, and phone number (I'll need to be able to reach you when we're on site). I will e-mail you back to confirm your registration.
Our last workshop with Billy had about 25% of registrants cancel after registering. It ended up being no problem, as a small class size helped facilitate the workshop, but in this case, Marnie has specifically expressed her worry about cancellations since it is free to students. For this reason, please only register if you can commit to coming! Again, it was really no problem the last time, but this time around, because they've thrown together such a good package for us, at the piddly cost of $200 to the union (free to you!), I'd really appreciate that you treat the commitment the same as you would with a studio class, or a professional engagement. I will be sending a list of registrants to Marnie, and she will be making us nametags and tickets, so please make sure you can make it before registering.
I'd like this information to get to as many people as possible, but we have limited e-mail lists, so if you can pass this on to other students who might be interested, including passing it on to your ensemble mailing lists and Facebook groups, it would be greatly appreciated.
Hope to see you there for some solid TSU bonding time! I think it's gonna be fuuuun.
