Summer event BBQ (at trout Lake)

6/17/2012

Picture
Attention theatre students and alumni!

For the first time since I can remember, the TSU will be hosting a mid-summer social event! Join us on SUNDAY JULY 8th at TROUT LAKE PARK to celebrate another successful year… and what better way to celebrate than with some delicious food?

As a thank you to everyone who studied hard, rehearsed long hours, volunteered their time and/or supported projects, the TSU will be providing copious amounts of meat (and veggie options) for the grilling! Don’t worry, these won’t be the cheap frozen patties that come in a box. Every burger and veggie burger will be made from scratch by our very own “TSU Cuisine Team”, headed by Deneh Thompson, with sous-chefs Davey Caulderon and Jessica Hood.

Here’s a message from le Chef:

All items with the exception of the Portuguese style buns (from Tartine's Bakery) are lovingly crafted by the hands of fellow TSU members. That means, it's all homemade from raw products. No jars, no cans, no microwaves.

Menu

Patties
Just Like Grandma's- made with fresh, never frozen Canadian beef
Veggie- fresh herbs and chick peas, delicious and nutritious

Ketchups
Classic- from Roma tomatoes
Chipolte- for a smoky zip

Relishes
Better than Heinz- home style with locally produced pickles
Red and Hot- roasted red pepper and pickled jalapeno

Mustard
Tasty- my favorite condiment, just as is

Mayos
Roast garlic- starts with local eggs, ends with awesome
Curry- light and tangy

Chutney
Pineapple tamarind- full of flavor and balance

The Fixin's
Lettuce
Tomato
Red onion

Vegan and other special requirements available by contacting Deneh. deneht@sfu.ca

This food will be FREE FOR ALL TSU MEMBERS AND ALUMNI. Can you bring someone else who is not a theatre student or alumni of SFU? Yes. We will have a couple of donation bowls for those outside of the union who wish to support the TSU in exchange for a homemade burger.

Another way to contribute is with more food! Our successful bake sales have proved that many TSU members have talents in the kitchen. You are encouraged to bring salads, sides, drinks, desert etc. to complete our delicious feast.

We will also be playing a variety of picnic games like Frisbee, bocce and some classics like potato sack and/or wheelbarrow races. There will be prizes, so bring you’re A game!

Lastly, we ask that you please RSVP BEFORE JULY 2ND by sending me an email indicating if you are coming, and how many non-TSU guests you will be bringing, so that we may plan accordingly.

The closest address to this area of Trout Lake Park is 2120 East 19th Avenue, Vancouver.  I’ve added a link to Google Maps if you need directions, as well as a map of the park. We will be in the picnic area from 12pm onwards. Feel free to give me a call if you get lost, or if you have any questions about the TSU BBQ.

Hope to see you there!

TSU Presidential Exit Report [Milton LIm]

6/7/2012

Dear TSU,

Please consider this as my Exit Report for my two terms of Presidency for the Union. Over the last two years, the TSU has gone through some major changes as we made our big move down to the Woodward’s building. Here are just some of the fantastic things we’ve done:
  • Published the annual SCA Directories
  • Organized and hosted many workshops (martial arts, lighting, devising, etc.)
  • Organized, purchased, and distributed Union merchandise
  • Held social events, fundraisers, and opening galas
  • Ran bake sales
  • Put together a website for our Union [theatrestudentunion.com]
  • Purchased and delivered the TSU fridge
  • Served as a collective voice to hold dialogue with the SFSS and Departmental Student Unions.
  • Organized and hosted Vancouver campus’ first ever Week of Welcome
  • Aided in the establishment of FCAT as a functioning faculty within SFU
  • Started the KIVA Project to serve as an avenue for students to give back to the community
  • Connected countless opportunities and distributed incredible amounts of information
The simple fact that we rewrote our constitution twice is very telling of our development since finding ourselves in a new home, with new rules, and new neighbors. On top of all these things, the Union has really established a presence within the downtown campus’ as well as fostering great relations with the SCA, FCAT, and the SFSS; the structures are now in place to let the Union’s hard work really pay off. Please allow me to share three values for the coming years:
  • Be bold and make decisions, I found that our time at SFU is too short to witness the changes you want to see in the University, students a decade from now will get to enjoy what we start now; work fast, see if you can prove me wrong.
  • Teamwork: you have an incredibly amazing Executive Committee stepping up, but please please please support them. Your presence will show the demand, and that will be the impulse to keep them going.
  • The Union is not just for self-serving provisions like merch and social events: it is also there as an avenue to voice what you want to see in your education, your future, and each other. Use the Union and don’t forget that together: You are the Union.
Attend the meetings, bring ideas, and actively participate however you are able; the Union lives and breathes with you. If left unattended, it will be forgotten and left behind. Please don’t let that happen; dig deeper and always be working. As you already know, I have a lot of faith in the potential of the TSU as an organizational tool, as a collective voice, and most of all -- as a group of wonderful artists that I have been lucky to hang around with. Thank you all so much for having me as your President for the last two years. I have learned incredible amounts and the experience will serve me well, but more than that -- I’m very excited to see where you go next.

A huge congratulations to your new President Kaylin Metchie, please support her as I know you will. In closing, here is my Presidential nomination speech:

Friends, Romans, fellow members of the TSU,
It is with honour that I write to you in hopes of being your next departmental student union president. In my first year, I attended almost all of the meetings, in my second year, I couldn’t make ANY meetings , but I dedicated myself to the position of forum representative with the SFSS, currently, I have been operating as VP finance: taking care of our monetary excursions.
I believe that the TSU is an integral part of our education: it opens up dialogue with faculty, facilities off the hill, and each other. It is important for us to be connected to the arts community; there’s so much to learn outside of our studio practices, and the TSU can be an invaluable vessel for that. I hope to expand on the dialogue, take on more ambitious projects, and build on the solid foundation of those before us. I am excited for what the move down to Woodward’s will do, but more excited for the opportunities that will arise.
Thank you to Stephanie Henderson for the nomination, as well as everyone else in the TSU for all of your work. Best wishes with the meeting all y’all.
-Milton Lim
P.S. Yes we can.

Thank you for everything. It sure was fun.

Please send future TSU inquiries to Kaylin at tsu-pres@sfu.ca
