SFU students vote yes to Build SFU
Burnaby, B.C. — Simon Fraser University students voted 1193:1003 in favour of a proposal to build a $65 million addition to the university's Burnaby campus.
Undergraduate students voted in a referendum on March 20-22 to decide whether to go ahead with the project, called Build SFU.
"We're ecstatic," said Simon Fraser Student Society president Jeff McCann. "There's no question that Build SFU will raise the profile of our school, but it will also make tons of social experiences possible that just weren't with the old campus. This facility will dramatically improve the student experience at SFU"
Build SFU was proposed by the Simon Fraser Student Society in partnership with SFU and other campus organizations. It is scheduled for completion by September 1, 2017 and would add about 100,000 square feet of student space, as well as a 2,500-seat outdoor stadium/seating, to the existing facilities on SFU's Burnaby campus.
Build SFU is meant to create social, recreational, and study space for students and SFU's many clubs, teams, and groups.
The project would be paid for by students as part of their student fees, starting at $10 per semester in 2014 and increasing to its cap of $90 per semester in 2022.
A Build SFU "Think Tank" consultation space about the project has been open to the public since Feb. 20, including architectural plans and 3D video renderings by Endall Elliot architects, and a large 3D model showing the location of the proposed addition. The Think Tank is located at MBC 2270 at the Simon Fraser University Burnaby Campus. The plan is to keep the Think Tank as a consultation hub for the project throughout the development phase.
Additional information, interviews with SFSS president Jeff McCann, architectural drawings, video, and photos of the Think Tank are available upon request.
